UOWFC were unlucky to lose 0-1 to Coniston in round one of the pre-season cup at Corrimal on Friday night.

Uni could have had a couple of goals early with some great build up play through the midfield, with several players showing the form that has been evident in preseason.

A horrible two footed tackle by a Coniston player ended Craig Hood’s night and remarkably only a yellow card was shown to the Coniston player in what must have surely been a ‘pre-season’ decision. A thumb injury to goalkeeper Liam Stevenson also is worrying with x-ray results pending.

Ultimately a mistimed challenge by Scott Mawbey gave Coniston the chance to take the win with a penalty which they took with open arms. Ricky Martinez could have given us a well deserved draw late in the game but decided to square the ball across the six yard box rather than shoot and the chance went begging.

All up it was a solid and extremely positive hit out in the first competitive game of the season and coach DaWatts has plenty of talent at his disposal. The squad is now looking ahead to Sundays games against Helensburgh and Shell Cove FC.
